In Mysterious Skin (2004), Brian Lackey is on a quest to uncover the truth behind a traumatic event from his childhood. After experiencing an amnesia blackout at the age of eight and waking up with a bloody nose, Brian becomes convinced that he was abducted by aliens. He believes that N. McCormick, a former teammate from his childhood baseball team, holds the key to unlocking his memories.
Meanwhile, Neil McCormick has chosen a different path to cope with his painful past. He becomes involved in hustling and moves to New York in an attempt to escape the memories that haunt him. As Neil and Brian's lives diverge, they both embark on separate journeys that ultimately lead them to the disturbing truth about the scars they share.
