Set during the second Sino-Japanese war in 1937 China, The Flowers of War tells the story of John, a mortician portrayed by Christian Bale. Seeking refuge, John arrives at a Catholic church in Nanjing to prepare a deceased priest for burial. However, he soon realizes that he is the only adult amidst a group of convent girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel.
As the Japanese army invades the city, John finds himself unexpectedly entrusted with the protection of these vulnerable people. Forced to put aside his own fears and personal agenda, he must navigate the horrors of war while preserving their safety. In this harrowing journey, John learns the true meaning of sacrifice and honor.
