Välkommen Mr Chance! (1979) tells the story of a simple-minded gardener named Chance, who has spent his entire life in the Washington D.C. house of an old man. When the old man passes away, Chance finds himself homeless and thrust into a world he knows nothing about, except what he has learned from watching television.
By chance, he has a run-in with a limousine, which leads him to become a guest in the home of a woman named Eve and her husband Ben, a powerful but ill businessman. In this new environment, Chance takes on a new identity as Chauncey Gardner.
Chauncey quickly becomes a close friend and confidante to Ben, and his presence within the household starts to have a profound impact on the political landscape. Despite his limited understanding of the world, his simple and wise observations on gardening are interpreted by influential figures as insightful political commentary.
As a result, Chauncey's influence grows, and he becomes an unexpected political insider. Despite his lack of formal education and understanding of policy matters, his simplistic perspective resonates with the public and the elites alike.
