In The Legend of Tarzan (2016), John Clayton, also known as Tarzan, has been living in England with his wife Jane after leaving Africa and his upbringing with apes following the death of his parents. However, they are summoned back to Africa by Belgian King Leopold to assess the situation in the country. Initially reluctant, Clayton eventually agrees to go with the persuasion of an American, George Washington Williams, who believes Leopold may be involved in slavery and other atrocities.

Upon their arrival, Clayton and Jane's village is attacked by Rom, an employee of Leopold, who captures them. With the help of Washington, Clayton manages to escape and embarks on a dangerous journey through the jungle to rescue Jane. Despite warnings that he might not survive, Washington chooses to join him.
