In the TV series The Leftovers, a small community in New York struggles to move forward three years after a bizarre event known as the Sudden Departure. This unexplained incident caused the disappearance of two percent of the world's population, leaving the remaining survivors with an overwhelming sense of grief, confusion, and disbelief.
As the town of Mapleton attempts to rebound from this unimaginable tragedy, we follow the lives of several characters who are each dealing with their own personal demons and trying to make sense of the inexplicable events. Kevin Garvey, the town's police chief, is wrestling with his own sanity while trying to maintain order and security. His wife, Laurie, has joined a mysterious cult known as the Guilty Remnant, who believe that the Departure was a sign of the end times.
Other characters, such as Nora Durst, who lost her entire family in the Departure, are grappling with survivor's guilt and attempting to find meaning in the chaos. Meanwhile, Reverend Matt Jamison challenges the community's beliefs through his book exposing the darker side of the Departure.
