The film follows the true story of Sydney Schanberg, an American journalist, and his Cambodian assistant, Dith Pran, who find themselves trapped in the midst of Pol Pot's genocidal campaign.

As the Khmer Rouge takes control of Cambodia in 1975, they begin a ruthless campaign to create an agrarian utopia by exterminating anyone they deemed undesirable.
