In a post-apocalyptic society known as The Ruin, a colorless and structured world has been established. The population follows strict rules enforced by the Chief Elder and the Elders, relying on drugs to maintain happiness. At the graduation ceremony, teenagers leave their childhood behind and are assigned careers determined by the Elders.

Jonas, a young boy living with his parents, feels different from his friends Fiona and Asher. He is selected to be the Receiver of Memories, a position that involves being trained by a wise mentor known as The Giver. The Giver shares memories of the world before The Ruin, introducing Jonas to emotions such as love, fear, and the concept of family.
