In Stand Up Guys, Val is finally released from prison after 28 long years, and his friend Doc is there to pick him up. However, their reunion takes a dark turn when they discover that the local mob boss, Claphands, wants Val dead. Claphands blames Val for the death of his son, who was killed in a robbery years ago.
With limited time until morning, Doc is faced with the difficult task of killing his best friend. As they embark on a night filled with adventure, Val is determined to make the most of his newfound freedom. They visit a cat house, where Val realizes he needs Viagra to fully enjoy the experience. In search of the pills, they break into a pharmacy, adding another crime to their already eventful night.
As midnight approaches, they are joined by Hirsch, their old wheelman, and together they drive through the city in a stolen car. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles and unpredictable situations. They visit the cat house once again, come to the aid of a woman in distress, bury a body, and enjoy a meal at Doc's favorite hangout.
As the sun rises, the pressure mounts as Claphands becomes increasingly desperate to see Val dead. Val, however, has come to terms with his fate and is prepared for the inevitable. The question remains, is there anything left for them to take care of before time runs out?
