In the comedic film Office Space (1999), Peter Gibbons despises his job at Initech and particularly loathes his overbearing boss, Bill Lumbergh. The company has recently brought in two consultants with the aim of downsizing, causing further discontent among the employees. Peter's closest allies are his coworkers, software engineers Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar, who share his disdain for Initech. Peter's neighbor Lawrence also provides a sympathetic ear.
Struggling with relationship issues, Peter goes to see hypnotherapist Dr. Swanson at the suggestion of his cheating girlfriend, Anne. During the session, Peter confesses how miserable his life is and is hypnotized by the doctor, experiencing a state of euphoria. Tragically, Dr. Swanson dies immediately after hypnotizing Peter.
Following the session, Peter starts dating a waitress named Joanna and undergoes a positive change in his attitude at work, catching the attention of the consultants, who promote him. However, Peter soon discovers that Michael and Samir are slated for termination. Determined to help his friends, the trio hatches a plan to plant a virus in the company's account system, aiming to embezzle small amounts of money into Peter's account.
But a mistake in the coding results in the trio siphoning off a significant sum instead. Terrified of the consequences, Peter, Michael, and Samir scramble to fix the situation before they are caught and sent to prison.
