Sixteen-year-old Lilja and her only friend, the young boy Volodja, live in Russia and dream of escaping their bleak lives for a better future. Their hopes seem to materialize when Lilja meets Andrej, a handsome young man who promises her a new life in Sweden. Excited by the prospect of leaving her troubled past behind, Lilja eagerly accepts Andrej's invitation.

However, upon arriving in Sweden, Lilja's dreams quickly turn into a nightmare. Andrej abandons her in a desolate apartment and forces her into prostitution to support herself. Desperate and alone, Lilja finds solace in the company of two fellow sex workers, a young girl named Alina and a kind-hearted pimp named Volodya.
