Irrational Man is a thought-provoking drama that follows the story of Abe Lucas, a philosophy professor who arrives on a small town campus near Newport, Rhode Island. Despite his bad reputation as a womanizer and alcoholic, what people don't know is that Abe is a disillusioned idealist. He is living in a state of deep nihilism and desperate desire to make a significant impact on the world.
In class, Abe goes through the motions, and outside of it, he drowns his sorrows in alcohol. His sex life suffers as well, as depression takes its toll. However, Abe finds himself drawn to one of his students, Jill Pollard, an intelligent and attractive young woman. Although their relationship remains platonic, Jill secretly desires more.
However, their lives take an unexpected turn when they overhear a conversation in a diner that has the potential to change everything. As Abe becomes obsessed with this newfound purpose, he plots a course of action that challenges his morals and the consequences spiral out of control.
