In Another Earth, seventeen-year-old Rhoda Williams is accepted into MIT but her dreams are shattered when she gets into a car accident while distracted by the discovery of a planet similar to Earth, called Earth 2. The accident results in the death of composer John Burroughs' wife and child, and Rhoda is sentenced to prison.

Four years later, Rhoda is released and moves back to her parents' house, working as a high school janitor. Struggling with guilt and depression, she attempts suicide but survives. She then enters an essay contest for a chance to win a ticket to travel to Earth 2.

As scientists discover that Earth 2 is actually a mirror of Earth, with its inhabitants experiencing the same events but making different choices, Rhoda decides to seek forgiveness from John Burroughs. However, she lies and tells him that he has won a free cleaning service for his home instead of confessing the truth.

Rhoda ultimately wins the essay contest, but she and John fall in love. Now faced with a difficult decision, she must choose between staying on Earth or traveling to Earth 2. Before making her decision, Rhoda is determined to tell John the truth about her involvement in the accident.

Another Earth explores themes of guilt, redemption, and the concept of alternate realities. This thought-provoking film raises questions about second chances and the consequences of our actions.
