In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, awakens after decades of suspended animation to find himself in a world filled with subtler threats and difficult moral complexities. When Director Nick Fury is killed by a mysterious assassin called the Winter Soldier, he warns Rogers that the secret intelligence agency SHIELD has been subverted by its enemies. Rogers takes Fury's warning seriously and refuses to trust anyone in the organization, which leads to him being labeled as a traitor and becoming a fugitive.

Now on the run, Captain America joins forces with the Black Widow and a new ally, The Falcon, to uncover the truth behind the deadly conspiracy. As they delve deeper into the mystery, Rogers discovers enemies where he least expects them and realizes that the Winter Soldier has a disturbingly familiar face.
