In the movie Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, viewers follow the life of 12-year-old Alexander Cooper, who feels like every day is a bad day for him. However, his family seems to have perfectly good days all the time, leading them to dismiss his feelings as silly. On the day before his 12th birthday party, Alexander discovers that another boy is having a party on the same day, and everyone is planning to attend that instead. This news, along with being bullied online, pushes Alexander to make a wish at midnight on his birthday. He wishes for his entire family to experience a bad day.

As a result, chaos ensues for the whole Cooper family. Alexander's mom's car breaks down, forcing them to share a car. His sister falls sick on the day of her important performance, and his older brother's plans to get his driver's license and bring his girlfriend to the prom fall apart due to her difficult personality. Meanwhile, Alexander's mom faces a crisis at work that might cost her her job, and his dad, who has a job interview, is burdened by his younger brother's incessant crying.

Feeling responsible for the family's predicament, Alexander embarks on a journey to make amends and bring back normalcy to their lives.
