In the movie Vanilla Sky, David Aames Jr. finds himself in a dire situation, charged with murder and incarcerated. He recounts his journey to McCabe, the police psychologist, revealing the events that led to his current predicament.
David is a wealthy man who inherits a major publishing firm from his deceased parents, but he is the subject of scrutiny from the firm's board. They believe David is too immature and irresponsible to run the company and would prefer to see him removed. Despite this, David forms a close bond with his best friend Brian Shelby, who is an author. He also engages in a friends with benefits relationship with Julie Gianni, whose feelings towards him may be deeper than he realizes.
Everything changes when David meets Sofia Serrano, whom Brian brings to one of his parties as a date. David feels an instant connection with her, and their relationship begins to bloom. However, tragedy strikes when David is involved in a disfiguring accident that also claims the life of the person responsible.
As David recounts his story, he becomes increasingly unsure about what is real and what is a dream or nightmare. Confusion sets in, and he seeks answers from a mysterious man he encounters at a restaurant who may hold the key to understanding his situation.
