A Bridge Too Far

The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of WW2 by driving through Belgium and Holland into... Germany. The idea was for US airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far. Show More

A Bridge Too Far is a historically accurate World War II film that tells the true story of Operation Market Garden. In September 1944, the Allies devised a plan to accelerate the end of the war by advancing through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The operation involved US airborne divisions aiming to capture the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen, while a British airborne division, assisted by a Polish airborne brigade, aimed to secure the town of Arnhem. The paratroopers were to be reinforced by the British XXX Corps, who would drive up from the southern British lines.

However, the success of the operation hinged on capturing the bridges, as failure to do so would leave the paratroopers stranded and unable to be relieved. Issues such as faulty intelligence, overconfidence from Allied high command, and the fierce resistance from the German army created significant challenges.

As the story unfolds, viewers are taken on a gripping journey that highlights the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers involved in Operation Market Garden. Ultimately, the battle in Arnhem proves to be a bridge too far, with devastating consequences for the Allies.

This compelling film masterfully depicts the complexities and human stories behind one of the most ambitious operations of World War II. It serves as a testament to the courage and determination of those who fought during this pivotal moment in history.
