In the year 1989, in East Germany, a young man joins the protests against the regime. Unfortunately, his mother witnesses his arrest by the police and, as a result, experiences a heart attack and falls into a coma. Several months later, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) no longer exists, and the mother unexpectedly wakes up from her coma.
Due to her fragile condition, the son decides to recreate the GDR within their apartment, in order to shield her from the reality of the political and societal changes that have occurred. He goes to great lengths to recreate the familiar sights and sounds of the former GDR, including finding old products, creating propaganda posters, and even organizing fake news broadcasts. However, while he strives to maintain the illusion for his mother, he realizes just how much the world has truly changed.
