She tells her story to Dempsy Police Detective Lorenzo Council, who is a black man. Brenda claims that she was carjacked by an unknown black man while taking a shortcut she had never used before.

Brenda works at the Rainbow Club, a children's center located in the Armstrong housing projects. She tells Detective Council that she was driving from work to her home in Gannon, New Jersey when the carjacking occurred. The incident leaves Brenda deeply traumatized, and her emotional distress affects those around her.
